Stained with Crimson, the first novella in the Book of the Damned starts off with the main character named Andre St. Jean getting handed a ruby encrusted scarab ring from a man who was being chased by two black dogs and a horse rider. This time period is taken in early 19th century. Andre is a poet for a living and in the story he has a longtime friend named Phillippe. Nothing is really mentioned about Phillipe except that he has lots of women interests. Andre wants to find out the owner of the ring and Philippe says he has a good clue and points out this girl named Antonina at a salon. She is the wife of Anton Von Aaron, the banker. She has black eyes and looks very mysterious and she also hates things that are red (irony later on). Andre finds Antonina and falls in love with her and has sex with her. We still aren’t sure if Antonina falls in love with Andre, but she is definitely obsessed with the scarab ring that Andre has. Andre always fantasizes about her, but she is always fantasizing about Andre’s ring.
Next couple days pass and Andre tries looking for Phillipe because he is nowhere to be found. Phillipe is found dead in his bathtub when he was placed through the top ceiling and not through a door. Andre has a funeral for Phillipe and there is irony during this scene because when Andre goes into the crypt, he sees Antonina placing a red rose on Phillipe’s tomb which is odd because Antonina told Andre that she hates red things. (Could be a trick to get the red scarab ring). Andre does not mind, however, and still makes loves to her in the attic of the house which Phillipe owns. The next morning, Andre’s friend confronts him about why he was in Phillipe’s attic. Later, Andre looks for Antonina, but could not find her. He gets notice that Antonina is really sick so Andre would go see her the next day. He goes the next day and finds out that Antonina is dead and Andre is heart-broken. Antonina’s ‘brother,” Anthony confronts Andre and is mad at him. He challenges Andre to a duel to get the scarab ring from him. They duel and Anthony kills Andre through the heart because Anthony’s ring had a silver bullet in it. Andre’s body gets put in a casket and is buried in a cemetery for the souls who lost in duels. Supposedly, Andre is still alive in the casket (probably because of the ring), but can’t escape the casket. He then would be reincarnated into Anna and this is where part 2 takes place.
