Stained with Crimson, part one of the book in the book called, The book of the Damned, by Tanith Lee. It starts off by him getting a ruby from a stranger who was apparently being pursued. The story takes place in the 19th century. He has a friend named Phillippe. Andre is also an experienced poet.
Later on andre meets a girl named Antonia in a salon, hopeing to find out who the ruby ring belongs to. Later on, his friend Phillipe disappears since Andre cant find him. But unfoutunately finds him dead in his bathtub. He then has a funeral for Phillippe and finds that Antonia put a red rose on his tomb, which is ironic because she hates the color red.
