In each of the three books Stained with Crimson, Malice in Saffron, and Empires of Azure is evident that each article of jewelry have special properties that both help to build the story and help move the story along. It is evident that each jewel is a symbol for an Egyptian meaning that the jewel fulfills. Each book gives examples of what each symbol means.
In Stained with Crimson the piece of jewelry found and used in the story is a scarab ring. The most evident power of the ring is its ability to reanimate people who have come in contact with the ring. Earlier in the book Andre, the main charter, receives a scarab ring. “I took his fist in both hands and prised it open, which was not easy. There in the palm was another ring that burned in the half-light a deep smooth red, like a drop of syrup.”(1, Kindle Locations 39-40).Before acquiring the ring the man giving it to him he tells Andre, “Ah yes. Now I will give you the secret of life.”(1, Kindle Location 35).This alludes to the upcoming events in the story. Later on Andre is killed in the story and is resurrected as a women. This is due to the power of the ring its ability is that it re animates people who come in to contact with the ring when they die.
In Malice in Saffron the piece of jewelry is a cross shaped necklace. The true power of this necklace is difficult to identify, but it seems it causes a new personality this shows that after looking at the cross Jeanine acts like a boy. “Her female bleeding had ended, and getting up she opened the chest and looked in at the items there, the male clothes and the rope, and the topaz cross. Soon a long-haired boy came out of the cell,” (1, Kindle Locations 2343-2345) She acts like a boy and when she doses she creates chaos including theft, murder, and rape. The owner of the cross before Jeanine was her father, who also fell to the madness that the cross gave. Under the influence of the cross he raped his own step daughter.
In Empires of Assure the piece of jewelry is a spider earring. The piece of jewelry has the ability to show visions, and to change the behaviors of a person. By changing the behaviors of the current owner it eventually creates a new person in the case of Louis de Jenier, who later in the story becomes Tuamon.
