There are many ways for the author to highlight the important parts of a book. The author has the option for whether or not to make it obvious for the reader to figure out the important spots. Tanith Lee, the author or The Book of the Damned, highlights the important parts of the stories by using a specific color. In the first story, Stained with Crimson, she sticks to highlighting with the color red.
Within the first couple of paragraphs, the main character, Andre St. Jean, receives a red scarab ring. This ring will end up leading him on an adventure to try and return the ring to its real owner. He goes to meet the banker’s wife, Antonina, so that he could give her the ring. She ends up mentioning that it isn’t hers because she does not like the color red. Later in the story the reader finds out that it is pretty interesting that she would say that she doesn’t like the color red.
The ring itself has a very significant meaning. Even though the ring is red, the real meaning comes from the fact that it is a scarab and that the red is just to highlight that it is important to the entire story. In the Egyptian culture, the scarab represents eternity and cosmic forces. Eternity and cosmic forces connect with the interesting aspect that Antonina doesn’t like the color red.
Antonina does not like the color red, yet later in the story, the reader finds out that she is a vampire. Vampires love to drink blood and blood is red. It would seem that Antonina was trying to pretend that she wasn’t a vampire and didn’t want to give away any hints, so she claimed that she didn’t like anything red, which includes blood.
Vampires connect with eternity and cosmic powers. They are able to live for eternity and they also gain cosmic powers. With the scarab, the holder of the ring possesses the ability to live forever and gain the cosmic powers that comes along with it. St. Jean has the ring towards the end of the story and he is turned into a vampire. He then gained the ability to live forever, and he now has the ability to change gender whenever, which is a cosmic power.
The color red showed that there were two very important pieces to the story. The ring and the blood, which are both red, both lead to the ending where there was the reveal of vampires and living forever.
